Week beginning 16th May 2022

 

This week in Maths we have been developing our understanding of length and height.

We have compared lengths using the greater than, less than and equal signs  (>  <  = )

eg 20cm + 30cm > 15cm + 15cm

 

Homework challenge - Fill in the missing signs in the following calculations

 

50cm - 30cm      10cm + 20cm

 

100cm     1m

 

45cm     30 + 25cm

 

40cm + 40cm     50cm + 20cm

 

In English we have begun reading a new story called 'The Diary of a Killer Cat'.

We have been introduced to the family,  who own Tuffy (the cat) and are beginning to form some opinions about the characters. 

Next week we are going to write a diary entry.

 

In Art we have been printing patterns using leaves and in Science we have been learning about the plants and animals that live in different habitats such as a woodland, ocean, desert or rain forest.

In PE we have worked as a team using the school parachute and have developed our skills using bats and balls, hoops and javelins.

Week beginning 9th May 2022

 

This week in English we have written a story about an animal that had a mishap and how this was resolved.

We  included a detailed description of our character, different types of punctuation and some humour!

 

In Maths we have been learning about length.

We can now use vocabulary such as long, longer than, longest, short, shorter than and shortest.

We are able to measure accurately using a ruler and understand that 100cm are equal to 1m. 

Homework challenge - Find 5 items at home that are shorter than 20cm 

 

In Geography we have been finding out about the weather in the United Kingdom and characteristics of the four Seasons.

Homework challenge - Match the months of the year to the correct season.

 

In Art we have been designing some new wallpaper for the Queen in the style of William Morris and in computing we have had  fun making repeating patterns using a painting package.

Week beginning 25th April 2022

 

In English we have been writing about our ducklings and how they have changed since hatching out of their eggs about a week ago.

We have tried to write longer sentences by using conjunctions such as 'and', 'but' and 'because'

 eg The ducklings like to sit under the heat lamp because they need to keep warm.

 

We have also been consolidating our understanding of contractions such as -

I am = I'm

you are = you're

could not = couldn't

is not = isn't

Homework challenge - Make a list of contractions you can find in your reading book.

 

In our Maths learning we have been finding out about quarters and thirds.

Homework challenge - find a quarter of 8, 12, 16, 20, 28, 40

 

In Geography we have learnt about some famous landmarks of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland such as Buckingham Palace, Loch Ness, Mount Snowdon and the Giant's Causeway.

We can also identify the flags that belong to each country in the United Kingdom.

 

In History we have learnt about a famous nurse called Florence Nightingale and how she helped the soldiers in the Crimean War.

Week beginning 18th April 2022

 

The children have come back to school fully refreshed after a lovely Easter break and are now keen to expand their learning further.

 

This week in English we have been consolidating our understanding of nouns, verbs,  adjectives and adverbs.

Homework challenge - Choose a page of your reading book and write down all the nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs you can find in the text. 

 

In Maths we have begun a new topic about Fractions and have been finding halves of shapes and quantities.

Homework challenge - Find half of the following numbers

2, 6, 10, 14, 20, 22, 28, 40, 82

Next week we will be learning about quarters.

 

In Geography we have been finding out about the United Kingdom.

We can now locate Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland on a map of the British Isles.

Next week we will be finding out about some famous landmarks of these countries.

 

We have also been learning our 'Green Cross Code' (STOP, LOOK, LISTEN and THINK) These 4 rules can help us keep safe when crossing the road.

We can also talk about some safe places to cross a road.   

 

We have some very exciting news to share with you. This week we have welcomed seven new ducklings to the Eagley family.

Many of us were lucky enough to see the ducklings actually hatching out of the eggs!
