little gardeners

Caring for our school environment is an important part of life at Eagley Infants. We are an RHS Five Star Gardening School and, as well as making the most of our garden areas in their lessons, our children play an active role in looking after and improving our school grounds. We sometimes invite adults from home to come along and join in the fun too at our Get Your Grown Ups Gardening days – dates are published on the newsletter near the time.

Autumn Planting

We have been busy planting garlic and onions in our vegetable plot. We put labels in so we know where they have been planted.

Bulb Planting

The Reception children have been planting up their old wellies with daffodil and crocus bulbs. We will attach these to the fence near our vegetable plot to brighten up the area in the spring.

EYFS Harvesting

We have harvested the produce from our EYFS vegetable plot and used it to make a yummy soup. Some of the carrots had been nibbled by slugs and snails meaning that we could not use them, but, rather than waste them we washed them and fed them to Chewy.

Plant Sale

Thank you to everyone who bought plants from our plant sale. The children have nurtured the seedlings throughout the spring and once the school vegetable plots and gardens were fully planted we were able to sell the remaining plants to our families. We raised a total of £300 which will be used to buy seeds, bulbs, compost and other gardening equipment to enable our gardening projects to continue.

Planting a Shady Border

Some of our Year 2 children have been helping to plant up a new border next to the path leading to our outdoor classroom. We are looking forward to seeing these plants fill the space under the trees.

Get Your Grown Ups Gardening

Thank you to all the adults who joined us for our Get Your Grown Ups Gardening afternoon. Everyone worked really hard and we managed to get through lots of sowing, clearing, weeding, cutting back and digging. We even managed to rebuild our sleeping ogre and make repairs to our willow tunnel and ivy covered arch. These afternoons are invaluable in getting lots of jobs done that the children can’t manage on their own so that our classes can then continue to look after and use our grounds as part of their learning.

Seed Sowing

Children in every class have been busy sowing flower and vegetable seeds. Over the coming weeks they will be responsible for watering and nurturing them to produce healthy plants to fill the beds and borders around our school grounds. Once this has been done any excess plants will be sold to raise funds for future gardening projects.

Bulb Sale

Thank you to everyone who bought daffodils at our bulb sale, we hope they have brightened up your home! We raised £90 which will be used to buy seeds, compost and equipment for future gardening projects.

Rabbit Buffet

After some guided research our children have planted up some pots with different herbs, vegetables and flowers that are safe for our rabbit to eat. We are looking forward to giving her lots of tasty treats from the rabbit buffet.
