Week beginning 26th March 2018
This week in Literacy we have continued to practise writing both uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
We have also been learning about the Easter story.
We now know why this time of the year is so special to Christians and why we gift Easter eggs to each other.
In Numeracy we have been developing our understanding of position and direction.
We have had a lot of fun seeing how objects look when they have been turned a half turn, a quarter turn, a three quarters turn or a full turn.
We have also learnt two new mathematical words -clockwise and anti-clockwise!
In Topic we imagined the kinds of patterns the dinosaurs might have had on their skins and explored this through our art work
On Wednesday we had a very eggciting Easter egg competition.
The entries from Year 1 were truly eggcellent!
We ended our Dinosaur topic by inviting Alex, from Bolton's Museum services, to come into
school and show us some dinosaur bones and fossils.
It was a very interesting time and Alex was really impressed with our knowledge of dinosaurs.
Week beginning 19th March 2018
This week in Literacy we have been concentrating on how to form capital letters correctly.
Maybe you could practise this some more at home.
Well done to the winners of the 5 Read trophy this week, Class C.
In Numeracy we have been learning to name and identify common 3D shapes such as a sphere, cylinder, cone, cube, cuboid and pyramid.
We looked at the properties of these shapes such as the number of faces and edges they have. We also found out which ones would slide or roll.
Then we went on a shape hunt around school to find examples of these 3D shapes.
How many 3D shapes can you find in your house?
In Numeracy we also learnt how to tell the time to half past the hour on an analogue clock.
In Topic we made dinosaurs using different 2D sticky shapes.
Thank you to everyone who attended the children's learning meetings this week.
As a staff, we are so pleased with the progress your children have made and the children were so excited to share their learning with you.
A number of parents have asked if there are any numeracy websites that we could recommend
A website that we particularly like is https://www.topmarks.co.uk
The game Hit the Button is excellent for improving mental maths and calculation skills eg number bonds to ten and twenty and doubling and halving. Helicopter Rescue is good for identifying the position of numbers on a hundred square
There are also plenty of other games and activities that will develop and enhance the learning of your children on this website. Have fun exploring!
Week beginning 12th March 2018
This week in Literacy we have been writing more dinosaur poetry!
We have become very clever at finding words that rhyme eg claws and jaws, munch and crunch, roar and soar.
At the moment we are also recapping on some of the spellings that we sent out earlier in the school year. Although the children do really well remembering their spellings on test days they are not always applying them in their writing.
Well done to Class C who won the 5 read challenge this week.
In Numeracy we have been developing our understanding of fractions.
We have learnt how to find a quarter of a shape, object or small amount of objects
Maybe you could practise this at home.
In Topic we have been developing our observational skills by drawing daffodils.
We looked carefully at the size, colour, shape and texture of the flowers
Week beginning 5th March 2018
This week in Literacy we have been looking at Dinosaur poetry.
We learnt some poems off by heart and performed them in front of our peers!
We then wrote our own dinosaur poems.
In Numeracy we have been measuring dinosaur bones in cm's.
Maybe you could practise measuring items at home.
In Topic we have enjoyed making dinosaur silhouettes and using our small world dinosaur land.
We wish all of our Mum's a very special Mother's Day.
Week beginning 26th February 2018
What an exciting week we have had!
We went outside on the back field and had fun in the snow!
