Summer Term - Wonderful Wildlife

Week Ending 15th July 2016

This week we watched 'Tuesday' by David Wiesner on youtube. We then used this to draw our own comic strip and make our own booklet.

 

In Maths we have been looking at 3D shapes and describing their properties such as, edges and faces.

 

In Topic we have been learning about edible plants. We talked about not just eating any plants we find.

We have been planting cress seeds in the hope that they will grow in time for us to make our own egg and cress sandwiches, using the eggs from the chickens.

 

We have been naming and labelling the parts of a plant.

 

We have been looking in our school grounds at the plants we have and we have been naming them.

 

At home you could look in your local area and see if you can name any of the plants you find. Remember though not to pick growing flowers.

 

Week Ending 8th July 2016

 

We will not be sending anymore spellings home this year. Instead, please practise reading and spelling the Year 1 words that have been sent home this week.

 

In Literacy we wrote a recount of our trip to Blackpool. We looked at photographs from the day to refresh our memories and then wrote about all the exciting things that happened on the day. We used time words such as first, next, then, after that and finally.

 

In Maths we have been measuring capacity using centilitres.  We have been reading the scales on different jugs.

In Topic we have continued to sew our puppets together, some of us have finished and are very proud of them.  We are very excited to be able to bring them home.

We have been sorting animals by what they eat. We have sorted them in groups: carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.

We have been looking at plants in our outdoor area and drawing what we have seen.

This week in Literacy we have been reading a traditional Russian tale called The Firebird retold by Mairi Mackinnon.

We wrote adjectives about the Firebird and then we wrote a description of our own bird.

  

 

In Numeracy we have been weighing in grams using measuring scales.

  

 

You could practise this at home.

 

In topic we have been learning about birds.

 

We looked at the characteristics of birds then drew and labelled a bird.

 

We named lots of different species of birds we knew. Then we went outside and stayed very quiet in the hope of spotting some birds.

 We had lots of bird craft activities to enjoy.

At home you could try and spot birds in your local area and then write about them in your homework books.

This week in Literacy we have been reading The Frog Olympics by Brian Moses.

 

We used this book to create our own comic strip. We drew our illustrations and added speech bubbles.

At home you could direct people using these words.

 

In topic we have been learning about reptiles and amphibians.

We have been looking at the characteristics of amphibians and then we found out about the life cycle of a frog.

 

We have been finding out about the characteristics of reptiles.

We created our own snake patterns.

 

 

We have been collaging our own amphibians and reptiles.

 

As our Phonics Screening Test is next week (W.C 13th June), please practise reading the sounds and using Fred Talk to blend words as frequently as possible. www.phonicsplay.co.uk (Phase 3, 4 and 5) has some games for the children to play.

This week in Literacy we have been reading The Fish Who Could Wish by John Bush. We have written what we would wish for and retold the story.

 

 

 

In Numeracy we have been moving the BeeBots and moving around a map using position and directional language such as:

Go

 

At home you could direct people using these words.

 

In topic we have been learning about fish.

 

We have borrowed Comet from reception to observe how he moves in the water.

 

We looked closely at a fish from the fishmongers and drew it then labelled its features. We talked about what makes a fish a fish and about the different species of fish we knew.

 

We found out about the life cycle of a fish.

 

We looked at work of an artist called Jason Scarpace. We then tried to paint out own fish using the techniques he uses.

 

 

At home you find out more about fish and add this to your homework.
