Summer Term 2

Week Beginning 17th June

 

This week we have continued our learning about sea animals. We looked carefully at a fish and talked about its' features, scales, fins, etc. We then carefully drew and labelled the fish. We found out lots of information about sea and ocean animals.

We read a story called 'Pesky Plastic' we found out the effect of plastic on our seas. We created 2 mini oceans, 1 was nice and clean and then looked at what happened when pollution entered the water. We discussed what we can to do help look after our world.

 

At home can you talk to your grown ups about what you could do at home to help our planet?

 

In maths we have revisited our number pairs to 0 - 5 and 10.

We played a very fast game of ‘hit the button’ to practise the pairs of numbers that make 10. We are getting faster and faster!

In literacy we read the story 'Commotion in the Ocean' We wrote about the different creatures in the book.

Week Beginning 10th June

 

First of all we would like to thank all the daddies and special people who came to join us this morning for our Father's Day stay and play. The children loved their time with you in school!

 

We had great excitement this week as 2 of our butterflies emerged from their chrysalis. We are enjoying watching them closely.

 

In English this week we have read the stories The Snail and the Whale and Sharing a Shell. We have thought about the things that we share or the things that people share with us and we have written about this in our learning.

 

In Maths this week we have been finding the difference between 2 numbers to 10, some of us worked with numbers to 20. We built towers to find the difference and also used Numicon. We wrote the subtraction that would go with it. For example, the difference between 3 and 8 is 5, 8 - 3 = 5.

 

At home you could continue your learning about finding the difference between 2 numbers, you could use things in your home to help you. You could use pasta, peas, grapes or anything else your grown ups can find!

 

In our topic learning we have explored fish and sea animals. We have created some observational drawings of fish and we have learnt some facts about sea creatures. We are looking forward to continuing our learning about sea creatures next week. 

 

At home you could find out some fishy facts and share them with your friends in school.

Week Beginning 3rd June

 

We hope you all had a lovely half term and are ready for our last half term together in Reception!

 

In Literacy this week to link with our theme of arctic animals, we read the story “Polar Bears are Hungry”. We have thought about other Arctic animals and we have been writing about them in our independent writing. We are continuing to practice our handwriting. We are making sure all our letters start on the line and that we are forming them correctly.

 

At home you could find out more about your favourite arctic animal and write about what you find out. We would love to see your writing from home.

 

This week started off ordering numbers to 20. We made a cube tower for each number.

We then went on to practice our number bonds to 5. We had our challenge!

Our Earth challenge was to use the 5 frame to show the ways to make 5. Our Moon challenge was to draw the ways to make 5 on the 5 frame and our Star challenge was to recall the pairs of numbers that make 5.

Then some of use practised the ways to make 10 using a 10’s frame.

 

At home ask someone to challenge you by telling them the pairs of numbers that make 5 and the pairs of numbers that make 10.

 

As part of our learning about Polar animals this week, we have explored the characteristics of penguins. We learnt what it is like to be a penguin, huddling together in the extreme cold and using a ball imagining that we were looking  after our egg in the snow and ice. We have also thought about polar bears and other animals and learnt about what they need to survive.
