Summer 1

Week beginning 13th May 2019

We have had another busy week in Year 2.  We have been recapping over lots of our learning from this year. We have been looking in particular at Maths and Reading. We have been looking back at all the super learning which we have been doing throughout Year 2 and seeing which bits we can still remember. We have been doing lots of practise of all different types of calculations and properties of shapes. We have also been looking at different texts and asking and answering questions on them.

We also learnt about litter this week. We learnt about what it is and the different things which we could do to help. We went to the local park and had a look for the different types of litter which we could see. We recorded this on a tally chart and we answered some questions on it. We are going to turn this information into a block graph to show our results. In a few weeks we will then be going on a litter hunt and picking up any litter which we see and recycling it.

This week marked the Entry Point of our new topic " Hooray! Let's go on Holiday!". For the entry point we had a special visitor come to school and show us some traditional bathing suits from the Victorian times and some of the different activities they would perform  at the sea side. She then performed a Punch and Judy show for us and we absolutely loved it! It was amazing! We then decided to think  about the different holidays we had been on and began to answer some questions. The questions we answered were; Where you been on holiday? What do you take on Holiday? What do you buy on Holiday? Why do you go on Holiday? We had some amazing answers for these questions which shows just how much knowledge we have on this topic already! We then looked at some of our different holiday destinations and looked at these on a map. We looked at which continent they were in and looked at how close they were to the equator. We also looked at how we travelled to these different destinations!

We hope you can join us at the Spring Fayre this weekend. Thank you for your support.

Week beginning 6th May 2019

We have had a lovely week in year 2 this week with lots of exciting news and events. We have been super busy and learning so many new things.

In Maths we have been looking at arithmetic calculations. We have been looking at x, +, - and ÷. We have been drawing out all our calculations which is amazing and it helps us to get to the right answer. We have also been looking at telling the time. To begin with we just looked at the minute hand. We worked out what the minute hand was pointing to and then we began to look at the hour hand and this helped us to tell the time. We have also been looking at shapes this week. We had to look at some 3D shapes and then decide how many edges, vertices and faces each one had. This can be a little tricky as you have to envision the shape in your mind to be able to identify these different features.

In English we have been writing our Jack and the Beanstalk stories but with a twist. The stories are absolutely fantastic and it would be amazing if you could come and read them with us! It is amazing to see how much better we have got at writing since the start of the year and we are amazing at using lots of grammatical features. We have been using adverbs, contractions, commas, question marks, exclamation marks and many many more things to make our stories just wonderful.

Our IPC this learning has continued and we have been looking at the computer programme Scratch. We have been learning how to open Scratch, put a background on and upload and edit our own pictures. We are going to be working on these for the next couple of weeks in order to finish our projects.

In Science we have been measuring. We have been looking at our bodies and using tape measures to measure our feet, head, leg, arm span, height and arms. We looked to see if we could see any similarities between the measurements. We  decided  to draw around our feet and measure different parts of our bodies.

Week beginning 29th April 2019

We have had a lovely week in Year 2 with lots of fun learning taking place. We are certainly going to be ready for the Juniors soon!

In Maths this week we have been looking at multiplying, dividing and looking at fractions. When we look at multiplying if the question was 3 x 5 = we would say 3 groups of 5 and then draw it out. It is important that the children know that 5 x 3 = would also get them the same answer. When we x 10 we explain to the children that when we x 10 a number gets 10 times bigger and the children spotted that this means it gets a 0 in the ones column. For example 5 x 10 the answer would be 50. When we divide we share into equal groups. So 12 ÷ 3 = we would draw 3 groups and share 12 between them. Again when we looked at ÷ 10 we explained that this is the same as making the number ten times smaller and the children noticed that the 0 in the ones disappears and we move the number in the tens into the ones. for example 60 ÷ 10 becomes 6. We then moved on to looking at fractions of number. We looked at a fraction like 1/2 and learnt the names of numerator and denominator. We used a simple rule to find a fraction of a number. If the question asked us for 1/4 of 12. We would look at the bottom number (denominator) and this is how many groups we would draw. We would then share the 12 between the 4 groups. After this we look to the top number (numerator) and this tells us how many of the groups to count to get our answer. On this occasion 1.

In English we have continued our planning of Jack and the Beanstalk. We have now created our twist and drawn a story plan. We have changed some of the characters and some of the objects in the story. We know that the stories are going to be fantastic and we will let you know when they are finished so you can come and read them with us.

In IPC we have continued our 'Say Cheese' unit. We have evaluated the photos which we took for our entry point and looked at what we liked about them and how we could make them even better. We have then been editing the photos which we have taken to make them even better.  We then used our computer skills to make a poster for the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. We have used word art and the internet to get pictures and writing which stands out.

Week beginning 22nd of April 2019

Welcome back to our Year 2 friends! This is a very important time in Year 2 and it was good to get straight back into our learning. We have been looking at addition and subtraction this week. We have been looking at adding and subtracting and making sure that we are drawing out tens and ones to help us with our learning and to make sure that we are getting the right answer. We have then been applying what we have learnt to some quiz questions. It is really important that we can apply adding and subtracting to a range of different context and that we are secure in our understanding of addition and subtraction.

In English this week we have started looking at Jack and the Beanstalk. We have watched a version of it and then listened to an alternative version called Jack and the Baked Beanstalk ( on youtube) to immerse ourselves in the story. We looked at Jack and the Beanstalk and we broke down the story into Introduction, Problem, Climax and Resolution. Once we understood the structure of the story we then decided to look at how the different characters would be feeling at different parts of the story. We looked in particular at how the Giant was feeling, what he might be saying and what he might be thinking after Jack had taken all his things. We then decided that we would become the Giant and write a letter to Jack asking for our gold back and saying what would happen to him if he didn't return the gold!

We have started our new IPC learning unit called 'Say Cheese!'. This is a computing unit where we are going to be looking at lots of new things. We started off with our entry point where we had our own photo shoot using props and we had to decide which pictures we thought were the best. We then looked at the knowledge we already had on photos and decided what makes a good photo. We had a vote on which photo we thought was the best and we had to say why. We are going to be learning about taking pictures and then uploading them onto a computer.

Thank you for coming to the Parents meetings this week. We hope you enjoyed celebrating all the wonderful Year 2 learning.
