Week beginning 16th May
On Monday when we arrived at nursery we found footprints across our nursery floor. We followed the footprints and we found a giant letter that was left for us. When we opened the letter we discovered that the Giant had climbed down the beanstalk over the weekend and he asked us to do some measuring around nursery. Because of our visit we have had a 'bean week' in nursery. We have played in baked beans filling different size bowls, used the tweezers to fill numbered tubs in the water tray and completed bean patterns on the writing table. In our outdoor area we have been using the small equipment to play throwing, catching and balancing games.
Week beginning 9th May
What an exciting week we have had this week. On Monday we decided to have a minibeast party to celebrate the end of our topic on Minibeasts. We planned what we needed for the party and decided to make party hats, bunting and some food treats. We chose to make shortbread biscuits and decorated them with mud icing and a sweetie worm.
This week we have also had a visit from Shirley who brought her minibeasts to show us. She showed us a Giant African Land Snail, an African Millipede and A Madagascan Hissing Cockroach and a Tarantula. We learnt lots of things including that minibeasts don't have any bones and Shirley showed us a snake so that we could compare the minibeasts to an animal that has bones.
On Friday we had our minibeast celebration. We made and ate honey sandwiches and the delicious biscuits that we had made earlier in the week. We are exhausted after our busy week but we have had lots of fun!
Week beginning 2nd May
This week we have made preparations and released our butterflies and ladybirds in our outdoor environment. We thought carefully about what the butterflies needed for their home and on Tuesday and Wednesday we planted some bedding plants in out garden area. On Wednesday we released our butterflies and they flew straight onto the new flowers that we had planted. They stayed there for quite a long time and for a while we thought that they didn't want to leave us. On Thursday we released our ladybirds into our garden who also enjoyed resting on our new flowers.
On our creative table this week we have created some flower pictures by speckling paint and blowing it into different shapes. We are going to display some of our pictures in nursery for everyone to enjoy.
Week beginning 25th April
This week we would like to welcome our butterflies and ladybirds to our nursery. Three butterflies hatched over the weekend and two more hatched on Monday night. We talked about how to look after them and we have collected flowers to place in their butterfly garden. Through the week our larvae have also changed and we now have lots of ladybirds.
Our learning focus this week has been about bees. On Monday we thought about what we know about bees and what we would like to learn about bees. We looked at a bee hive and the honeycomb and we tasted the honey from the beehive - it was delicious! We learnt that bees have 5 eyes and that the buzzing sound is made by their wings.
Week beginning 18th April
In nursery this week we have been extremely busy rolling and pinching clay to make our very own snails, as well as making some beautiful butterflies using paint and cutting the tricky shapes out all by ourselves. We have also taken advantage of the lovely weather and been on a mini beast hunt and even enjoyed our snack outside.
Week beginning 11th April
This week we have been painting observational pictures of minibeasts. We have counted the legs on a spider and looked at how they have 4 legs on each side to help them balance. We then used different collage materials to make our own spiders. We have been using cubes to measure worms and finding out which is the longest and shortest worm. We have enjoyed playing in our digging pit and we would like to thank all the adults who helped to make it for us on Sunday.
Week beginning 4th April
What and exciting week we have had to the new term. When we came back to nursery our role play area had changed in to a Creepy Crawly Corner. We have been investigating bugs and minibeasts using microscopes and dressing up as different minibeasts. On Tuesday 5 caterpillars joined us in nursery and we read the story "The Hungry Caterpillar". We are taking care of our caterpillars and we think they will grow into butterflies quite soon. On Thursday we received some ladybird larvae. They are very tiny and are difficult to spot in their container. We are looking forward to watching them grow and change.
