Spring 2 - From farm to fork

Week ending 27th April 2018

The children have had a super week of learning and they are impressing us on a regular basis. The children have been doing incredible work all week and they have been doing so much work as we approach the end of year 2.

In Mr. Proctor's class we have been looking at subtraction. We have subtracted 2 digit numbers and even started to subtract amounts of money and give change! Mr. Proctor has been so impressed with us all as we have been trying our best and being resilient. We are always looking to better our selves which impresses him the most.

In Mrs Field and Mrs Chadwick's class we have been looking at multiplication. We have been doing such good work that they are both blown away with our attitude and our learning. We have all made so much progress which is amazing.

In English we have been looking at our trip to PGL. We have been writing a recount all about PGL. It is lovely to see how much fun the children have and how excited they are about what happened at PGL even now. We have also had some lovely writing where the children have been using some adverbs.

In topic we have continued our learning looking at being healthy. We have been looking at healthy eating and making a healthy packed lunch. We have even had a turn at making our own fruit kebabs. We got to choose our own fruit to put on the kebab. Then the best bit we got to eat our fruit kebab!

Thank you for your support with the reading paper and reading with your child every night.

Week ending 20/04/2018

We have had a super first week back. The children have done some amazing learning and it is wonderful for us to see just how far they have come. We are currently preparing the children for the end of key stage 1 assessments so we are doing lots and lots of work with them. As usual we only ask you to read with your child and do spellings with them. We have sent home a practise paper for you to do with your children to help them with their learning and show just how important reading is in year 2.

In English we have been remembering our favourite day in the holidays and writing all about it. We have written all about our favourite day whilst remembering to do our best year 2 handwriting. The teachers said that we do not need holidays anymore so we had to convince them that we have such a super time during the holidays that we need holidays in the future.

In Maths we have been looking at multiplication and division through arrays. We have been using the different arrays to help us write our multiplication calculations. This has been very tricky but we have shown such great resilience that we have now got it! Some of us have been looking at adding different amounts of money together. We have even been able to add two amounts of money together that go over £1! We will be able to do your shopping for you in no time!

In science we have continued our learning all about animals including humans. We have looked at why it is important for us to exercise and what different types of exercise we do. We looked the benefits of keeping active.

In design technology we are going to be creating a smoothie. We gathered some information from year 2 and recorded it as a tally chart. The information we have gathered we will use to help us create a fruit smoothie! Yum Yum!

Thank you for your support. It is especially needed this time of year.

Week ending 9/3/18

We have had a super week in school. It has been a lovely week where we have learnt lots and lots of new things. Some of the new things have been a little tricky for us but we have all impressed the teachers with our attitude as even when the learning has got a little tricky we have not given up and we have tried our very best. We have learnt what resilient means and it will be a very important word for us over the next couple of weeks.

In maths we have started working through the exemplification documents. If you want to have a look at these please copy the link

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/2016-teacher-assessment-exemplification-ks1-mathematics

because we are looking at exemplification we are going to be covering a lot of different topics within maths. There are also exemplification documents for science, reading and writing and they can also be found on the government page or by googling KS1 exemplification.

In English we have been looking at the story of Mossop's last chance from the Mudpuddle Farm books and these books will form our learning for the whole of this half term. We have immersed ourselves with all sorts of different parts of farm life and gained a secure knowledge of the text for when we begin to write our story with a twist.

In Science we have begun looking at life cycles of animals and this has coincided with the arrival of our chick eggs. We will be monitoring the eggs looking for signs of change until they eventually hatch.

In Computing we have learnt a new word. We have been looking at games and testing them out on scratch. The new word we learnt is algorithm, test us to see what it means!

Thank you for your reply slips for parents meetings and for the violin and for your cooperation with PGL. We would also like to thank you for getting the Mudpuddle farm books in order to help with your children's learning.

Week ending 16th March  2018

We have been continuing our work through the exemplification materials. We have been looking at two step word problems and adding 2 two digit numbers as well as subtracting a two digit number.

We have also been continuing our learning about Mudpuddle farm. We have now created our own farmer and main characters for our story. We have also now created a plan for our own story. All the teachers are looking forward to reading our stories as they are sure they will be amazing.

We had an extra PE session where we joined in with a HIIT session on a live stream from the Bodycoach. The children loved the extra exercise and we had lots of red faces.

We have begun our writing on our chick diary where we are looking at the progress of our chicken eggs. We can't wait for them to hatch.

We have also conducted a comparative experiment where we looked at whether children get faster as they get older. We had some races against the nursery children to carry out this experiment.

Please see the link below for the PGL kit list in case you misplaced it.
