Week Beginning 13th February 2017
This week we have been very busy! In Literacy we have been talking about things that we are really good at and telling our friends what we think they are good at doing. We have been writing about this too!
In Maths we have continued to learn about money, practising counting in 1's and 2's so that we are able to count amounts with 1 pence and 2 pence coins. We are getting very good at it!
Finally, today we have had a very fun day! Cinderella, the Ugly Step Sisters, the Fairy God Mother and the Ugly Step Mum all came to visit us and we had a special ball. We all dressed up as a Prince or Princess, or wore our gorgeous party clothes. We all looked very smart as we did some ballroom dancing and had special party food.
We hope you all have a wonderful half term, don't forget that Class E's individual learning meetings are on the first day back after half term. See you all 27th February 2017! Have a lovely week.
Week beginning 6th February
This week we have had a wonderful time sharing our learning with lots Mums, Dads and Grandparents who came to see how we learn in mathematics. We showed them how fantastic we are at counting in 1's and 2's and how we can count amounts of money using 1p and 2p coins. All the adults enjoyed joining in with our continuous provision activities and some of them explored writing in the corn flour. Thank you to all the adults who were able to join us.
In literacy this week we have been exploring a "Winter Tale". We have been using puppets to explore what the characters from the story might say to each other and using these ideas to write sentences.
In topic this week we have developed the winter theme and explored what it is like in the winter and created winter pictures using pastels. We also learnt about Arctic animals and made our own igloo's and dens outside. As part of our learning about winter we thought about how ice is made and we tested our ideas by placing water around school to see where the best place was for it to freeze. We then drew conclusions about why the freezer was the best place to make ice.
At home you could perhaps place an ice cube in different areas of the house to see where it melts the fastest.
Week beginning 30th January
This week we had a visit from the Gingerbread Man who left us and apron, a rolling pin and a Gingerbread Man cutter. We have been exploring the ingredients used to make gingerbread men and describing what they smell and feel like. We then wrote sentences using some of our describing words. We decided that the ginger was spicy, the flour was soft, the sugar was sticky and the butter was greasy.
In mathematics we have been learning to add 2 numbers together by putting the largest number in our heads and counting on.
In topic we made gingerbread men and ate them like the fox! In our outdoor area we made a bridges to move the Gingerbread Man across the river from one side to the other. We were visited again this week by Cinderella. She told us that she was very unhappy so we suggested that a ball might cheer her up. We have decided that we are going to have a ball in the last week of term and we wrote an invitation to ask her to attend. Please look out for more information about our ball.
Week beginning 23rd January
When we arrived in school on Monday we found a magic carpet, a pair of Genie slippers and a magic lamp in our role play area. We concluded that the Genie had visited us over the weekend, so we decided to read the story Aladdin. In our writing we have been thinking about what we would wish for if we found a magic lamp and where we would go if we had a magic carpet.
In numeracy we have been using the Beebots to learn about directional and positional language.
As part of our topic learning we have been learning about which animals live in the desert, exploring items that float and sink and thinking about the things we would like to achieve this term.
At home you could talk about the journeys you take using directional language.
Week beginning 16th January
This week we have been busy learning about Chinese New Year as part of our 'Arts Week' across school. All week we have learned alongside the Year One and Year Two children and have met their teachers while learning in their class. We have learnt how the Chinese celebrate New Year at home and in school and watched a dragon dance. In Reception we have planted Pak Choi seeds. We have also learnt how to play Bamboo Tamboo and we composed our own music by thinking of things associated with Chinese New Year and tapping or banging out rhythms on the instruments. Other activities that we have completed in Reception are making dragon masks, making movable dragons and making Chinese money packets. Throughout the week we have been learning a song about Chinese New Year and we have also learnt a dance which we performed as part of our whole school celebration on Friday morning. We would like to wish you all Gong Hey Fat Choi (Happy New Year).
Week Beginning 9th January 2017
Happy New Year Everyone!
Our first week back after Christmas got off to a very exciting start when the characters from Cinderella visited our classroom on Monday! There was Cinderella, the Ugly Step Sisters, the Step Mother and the Fairy God Mother. The children enjoyed listening to the story and being taught by the characters all day, the Ugly Step Sisters were a bit mean though!
In Literacy we have been reading the story of Cinderella and thinking of lots of describing words about all the different characters. The children have been writing sentences about Cinderella and how she feels.
In Mathematics we have been doing lots of counting skills this week. We have been doing lots of careful counting and played exciting number games. We have also been practising to say one more than and one less than a given number. We have got very good at it, maybe you could keep praactising this at home.
Today we have had lots of fun in the snow! We had a snow ball fight on the playground before going onto the big field to continue our fun! Some of the children even built a Snowman!
