Week ending 9th February 2018
We have had another busy week in year 2. We apologise about the lack of photos on our website and we endeavour to put more on however this is a very busy time of year for us and all our work is being done in our books.
In Maths we have been looking at subtraction. We have been using numberlines to help us subtract. First we partition the smallest number and then take the number away in jumps of tens and ones. This is a little bit tricky but we have been so impressed with the children's perseverance with the task and we have had some amazing work.
In English we have created an information leaflet all about how the Rainforest is endangered and we have also looked at certain animals which live in the Rainforest which are also endangered. We have been looking at different sentence types in order to write our leaflets. We are experts and questions and commands! Ask us for some ways which you can help save the Rainforest.
In topic we have continued our learning on the Rainforest and in particular we looked at how certain Rainforest animals are adapted to the environment which they live in.
It was also safer internet day this week which focused on how we can make the internet a better place. The children are very good at keeping their information private online and also talking about what they should do if they see something which they find inappropriate online so it was good to see all the lovely things the children have said which they can do to make the internet a better place.
Due to the lack of photos online it highlights the importance of our drop in sessions. Please feel free to use the drop in sessions to have a look at the learning zone and the learning in your child's book. Please see the newsletter for when the parent drop in sessions are.
Week ending 2nd February 2018
In English this week we have been looking at the story 'Slowly, slowly, slowly said the sloth'. We looked at this story because it shows us how to use some lovely adverbs. We all wrote our own sentences using adverbs. We created some sentences that were describing activities of Rainforest animals using adverbs. We have also practised spelling some special year 2 words. We will be bringing home a fish that shows you the words we can spell and the words we find a bit tricky. It is really important that we can spell these words so this is why they have been sent home.
In Maths we have been looking at adding 2 two digit numbers. In order to do this we follow some simple instructions including partitioning. If you want to practise this at home then come into school and speak to a teacher about the way we do it.
In topic we have been using the computers, Ipads and an information text to find out information on the red eye tree frog. We have found out lots of interesting facts about the tree frog ready to continue our topic learning.
Week ending 26th January 2018
In Maths this week we have been looking at place value. We have been partitioning into tens and ones as well as writing our numbers in words. We had the pleasure to be joined by lots of grown ups in year 2 and even though it was a tight squeeze the children had such fun and did some incredible learning. Thank you for joining us and helping the children with their learning. Please could you practise spelling numbers in words at home. all the way to one hundred!
In English this week we have been writing the story of Jack and the beanstalk. We have written our story with a twist. The stories are amazing with lots of imaginative ideas! Some of the beanstalks have an alien at the top! Which has caused the teachers some concern as in topic we have been planting our own beans and the last thing we want is a giant or alien turning up at school!
In topic we have continued our learning about the Rainforest. After learning about the different layers of the Rainforest we had to categorise the different animals by the different layers which they live in.
We have also been looking at our experiment and we have recorded the progress of the plants up to now. Its very exciting as we are beginning to see some signs of growth.
Week ending 19th January
We have had a lovely week in year 2. In our Maths we have been creating tally charts, pictograms and block graphs. We collected the data and then put it into the different graphs and charts. We were then able to answer questions on the information we collected. Some of these questions were tricky but we didn't give up and we all succeeded in our learning. Next week in Maths we will be looking at place value and we are looking forward to seeing all the grownups who have replied and will be joining us on Wednesday.
In English we have continued to look at Jack and the beanstalk. We are now ready to write our own version of Jack and the beanstalk with a twist. We have created our own characters and we have ordered the story in our plan ready to begin writing next week. The teachers are going to set us a challenge when we are writing our story to see if we can use contractions and different pieces of punctuation.
We have continued to look at the Rainforest this week and we have been learning about where the Rainforests are in the world. We have also looked at the different layers of the Rainforest and helped Annie the anteater choose a place to create her habitat.
We continued with our computing learning. We stayed in our role as detectives and we have found Mrs. Field's missing cake. Mr Proctor had taken it to save it and wish Mrs. Field a happy birthday. The children loved being detectives and learnt lots of key facts about how they can stay safe when using the internet.
Week ending 12th January
We have had a busy week this week where the children have all been amazing. They have worked their socks off and we are all very proud.
In Maths we have been looking at time. We have been telling the time to 5 minutes. This is a tricky thing to do so we will be coming back to it again. Any reminders at home will help the children lots. Showing the children the clock when they have to do something will help! eg It is bed time now look at the clock what time does it show?
In English we have started learning about Jack and the beanstalk. The children have loved the story and have loved watching the story on Youtube. We have even looked at some alternative stories of Jack and the beanstalk looking at Jack and the baked beanstalk (also available on Youtube).
In topic we shared our lovely homework with the class and told everyone a fact which we found out. All the paper animals have now been displayed in our year 2 Rainforest and it is looking so bright and colourful. Please feel free to come in and have a look. We have also been thinking of some questions which we would like to find out during our Rainforest topic.
We have also started a new topic in Computing where we have to become detectives. Unfortunately Mrs. Field's cake has gone missing from the staff room and she is counting on us to help her find it. We are contacting each other through email to find clues and try and get the cake back!
Thank you for all your help with the lovely homework they really do make year 2 look beautiful!

Welcome back after the Christmas break! We have had lots of fun this week as we have been looking at lots of different fairy tales. We have been looking at Goldilocks in year 2 and we have been doing some lovely activities. We have been guiding Goldilocks back home using the Bee-Bots, we have been making bowls of different sizes for the porridge, we have used lots of different materials to create a big picture of Goldilocks and we have been playing some Maths games too.
We have shared lots of fairy tales this week with each other and on Friday we were able to bring in our favourite book. We had had some people who are special to us in school to share some valuable time with, as we read a book together. Thank you to all the grown ups who came to visit us.
Next week we will continue to look at a fairy tale as we begin looking at Jack and the Beanstalk. We will also be looking at time so if you have a watch don't forget to wear it!
