It's a pirates life for me! - Summer

Week ending 27 May 2016

We have had a very busy couple of weeks in school showing off all of our super learning ideas. We have been looking at a variety of different topics and for our final week of the half term we have been looking at pirates once more.

In our maths lessons we have been looking at money and different amounts which we can use to buy things. Any extra help at home where the children could be using money will help our learning greatly. We have also been looking at making pairs of items and finding out is we would have any remainders.

In literacy we have been looking at our different suffixes which we can add to words to make them longer. The suffixes we have been looking at are -ment, -ful, -ness, -ly and we have been using these to write some super sentences about pirates.

Our big trip to Queens park was a huge success and we had so much fun. Despite it being a little wet we all had time to get a lovely ice cream. We were all so well behaved getting on and off the train and we made all our teachers at school very proud.

Week ending 22 April 2016

We have had another super week of learning in Year 2 this week.

We prepared and baked scones ready for the Queen's 90th birthday tea party and then we wrote a set of instructions.  Thank you so much to all of our parents who accepted our invitation to attend the tea party this Wednesday!  We had such a lovely time

together chatting, drinking cups of tea and tasting delicious scones!  We ended our lovely morning by singing The National Anthem and Happy Birthday to Her Majesty!

This week in topic we have been continuing our learning in Science about habitats and we went outside to be bug detectives and searched for mini-beasts.  We found lots of mini-beasts and insects and then we created hotels and homes for the bugs.  we had to think carefully about what the insects would need to survive.

On Wednesday afternoon we visited Turton High School to use their computing and media rooms to type up letters to the queen!

We have also been learning about what pirates ate and drank.  We watched a Horrible Histories Master Chef video about pirates and learned that they ate turtle, dolphin, whale and even rat!  Our most disgusting fact was learning about what pirates used to drink - ask your child to share our disgusting drink fact with you!

At home you could help your child by listening to them read or sharing a book with them each evening.   Next week our focus in maths will be to learn about the properties of 3D shapes.  Can you be shape detectives at home and find and describe examples of the following 3D shapes:

Cube

Cuboid

Triangular Prism

Sphere

Pyramid

Cone

Bring in your examples to class next week so we can discuss the properties of the 3D shapes during our maths lesson.

Week ending 8th April 2016

In maths we have been looking at fractions of ½, ¼, ¾. 1/3. We also looked at adding 2 amounts of money together. We also looked at different ways in which we can make the same amount of money. We looked at different coins which we could add together to make 50pence.

We have been focussing a lot on our mathematical knowledge and using our number bonds to 10 and 20 to help us. We have also been practicing our times tables of  2s,3s,5s and 10 times tables and looking at recalling our times tables quickly and any practice at home will help our learning further.

In English lessons we have been doing lots of pirate themed writing. We have been discussing how we made our pirate ships. We have been describing our pirate ships using adjectives. We all tested our pirate ships to see if they floated in water and used this information to help us describe what our ships could do.

In topic we looked at the different software which we can play games and the different things which we can change. We also looked into all the famous pirates and did our best research into Black Beard. Ask the children for all the information they know on Black Beard, it’s very impressive.

Thank you for all your help on pirate day the children had a wonderful time. We also look forward to seeing you at the sleepover.

Week ending 15th April 2016

In maths we have been looking at solving missing number problems by using the inverse operation. We have also been using our mathematical knowledge to estimate the answer to some mathematical problems.

We have been focussing a lot on our mathematical knowledge and using our number bonds to 10 and 20 to help us. We have also been practicing our times tables of  2s,3s,5s and 10 times tables and looking at recalling our times tables quickly and any practice at home will help our learning further.

In English lessons we have been looking at pirates and writing our pirate poems. We have also been looking at present and past tense verbs. We have also helped the pirates of Bromley cross to be writing their own pirate songs. We have also been practicing our handwriting concentrating on keeping all our lower case letters the same size and capital letters to be twice the size of lower case letters.

In topic we have been looking at famous women pirates. We have also been making a life size pirate for display using different materials to make him look realistic as possible. In computing we have also been testing games and looking at the algorithms which are in place in order to make the game work.

We did a recount of our sleepover and all the different activities which we did. We would like to thank our parents for their help preparing the children for the sleepover.
