How does your garden grow? - Spring

How does your garden grow

Week ending 25th February 2016

In maths we have been looking at number and place value.  We have been focussing on ordering numbers to 100 and then partitioning these in as many different ways as we can. We have also looked at estimating different values which we were superb at. As always we have also been working on our 2s,3s,5s and 10 times tables and looking at recalling our times tables quickly and any practice at home will help our learning further. In particular we need to get better at our quick recall of 10 times tables and number facts to both 10 and 20.

In English lessons we have been reading Jack and the Beanstalk. We have been looking at the different tenses which are used in the book and we even got chance to interview some of the characters. We had some real giant’s clothes to look at. We have been practicing making sure we are writing in the correct tense by writing notes from one character to another and by becoming the character and writing how we are feeling. We have also been making our writing even more amazing by putting words in the contracted form into it. We did this by creating a do’s and don’ts guide to how to look after a plant.

In our topic we have been learning all about our new topic which is plants. We have been looking at how they grow and the different structures of the plants. We have been drawing plants and making sure we get the different structures in. We looked at plants which grow that we eat. We talked about all the different fruit that grows and how this is a plant which we eat. We even got to taste some smoothies and say which ones we liked the best.

In computing we have started our new topic which is all about testing out games. We all made a prediction about a game on what happens when you win, get a question right and when you get a question wrong. We all had so much fun making these predictions and playing the addition race game.

In handwriting we have been looking at joining 's' and 'h', 'e' and 's'. Here is a picture of the joins so you can practice at home.

Thank you very much for returning the homework they are amazing. They are all on display in the creative area for year 2 and we have been reading them and writing what we like about each piece.

Week ending 4th March  2016

In maths we have been looking at addition and subtraction using money.  We have been partitioning numbers and them adding together the tens and the ones before we give our answer. We have also been finding the difference between two numbers. As always we have also been working on our 2s,3s,5s and 10 times tables and looking at recalling our times tables quickly and any practice at home will help our learning further. In particular we need to get better at our quick recall of 10 times tables and number facts to both 10 and 20.

In English lessons we have been reading Jack and the Baked Beanstalk. We have been looking at comparing the two different stories and looking at what is the same and different. Whilst we have been doing this we have been focussing on using conjunctions in our work. The conjunctions which we have been looking at in particular is because, and, but, so, if. We have also been making our writing even more amazing by putting different endings onto words to create a beautiful poster for our Tatton flower show.

In our topic we have been learning all about our topic which is plants. We have all planted our very own sunflower seed and are going to be looking at how it grows. Still looking at fruit we can eat we have created a design brief which we will use to create our very own smoothies next week!

In a very busy week we have been making Mother’s day cards and we had world maths and world book day. We had super fun playing our maths related board games, so thank you very much for bringing them in. We also all had lots of fun dressing up as our favourite book character and listening to all the different teacher’s favourite stories.

In handwriting we have been looking at joining 'e' and 'a', 'e' and ‘e'.

Thank you very much for your help this week with costumes and bringing in different resources.

Week ending 4th March  2016

In maths we have been looking at addition and subtraction using two digit numbers.  We have been partitioning numbers and them adding together the tens and the ones before we give our answer. We have also been finding the difference between two numbers. We found this very tricky and we will be doing lots of practice on subtraction. As always we have also been working on our 2s,3s,5s and 10 times tables and looking at recalling our times tables quickly and any practice at home will help our learning further. In particular we need to get better at our quick recall of 10 times tables and number facts to both 10 and 20. Another task you could try at home would be counting forwards and backwards in tens from any given number.

In English lessons we have been planning to write our own traditional tale of Jack and the beanstalk but with a twist. We have planned our story which is similar to Jack and the Beanstalk but we have changed the main character in the story and we have also changed what awaits them at the top of the beanstalk! We have also been trying our hardest to get lots of punctuation in our writing. We have looked at question marks, exclamation marks, commas in a list and full stops.

In Science this week we have carried out our very own investigation. We have planted some seeds and left them in different destinations around the school. We are seeing how they will grow with different amounts of sunlight. We have a cress seed diary which we fill in to monitor the progress. We have all made a prediction of which one of the 3 plants we think will grow the best.

In handwriting we have been looking at joining 'e' and 'a', 'e' and ‘e'.

Week ending 19th March 2016

In maths we have been looking at subtraction using two digit numbers.  We have been subtracting using a number line and then jumping back in tens and ones. To do this first we have to partition the number. We have also been looking a lot at partitioning numbers in different ways.

In English lessons we have been writing our own traditional tale of Jack and the beanstalk but with a twist. We have been taking our time with these stories and doing our most beautiful handwriting and using our writers brains to help us produce some magical stories. WE have all been trying our best to put commas as a list into our writing to add description to our characters.

In Science this week concluded our investigation by looking at the different plants which we planted. We filled in the results on our table and had to see if our prediction was correct.

We have also been doing lots of fun Easter activities ready for the Easter break.

In handwriting we have been looking at making sure our lower case letters are all he same size and our ascenders and descenders go to the same height or depth. We have also been making sure that you can clearly see our capital letters and they are twice as big as our lower case letters.

Thank you very much for your continued support over the half term and we hope you have a nice break over easter.
