Week beginning 10th October
This week in literacy we have been writing instructions for making magic potions for George from George's Marvellous Medicine. We also wrote instructions for getting dressed in a morning.
In numeracy we have been beginning to learn pairs of numbers that make 10 e.g.
We have also tried to find the missing number in a number equation - 4 + _ = 10.
Maybe you could practise this at home.
In topic we have been making crispy cakes for the Harvest Bake to raise money for the orphan children in Kitwe, Zambia. We have also enjoyed programming Beebots (a programmable toy). We gave him instructions to move along a road map.
Week beginning 3rd October
This week we read the story Highway Rat. We enjoyed retelling the story and used signs and actions to help. We then used speech bubbles to write what the characters from the story might be saying.
In maths we have been using the +, - and = signs. We rolled two dice to generate the numbers to make a number equation e.g. 3+2= . Maybe you could try this at home.
In topic we are still learning about ourselves and our bodies. This week we read the story Funnybones and made pictures of our skeletons.
Week beginning 23rd September
This week we have been measuring objects around the classroom. We used non standard units to measure with, for example, cubes and paper clips. Maybe you could try this at home. How many paper clips long is your toothbrush?
In literacy we read the story Snail and the Whale. We highlighted some describing words in the story and talked about their meaning. Later we sequenced pictures from the story and wrote our own sentences containing super describing words to match the pictures.
Thank you to all our families who came to the MacMillan Coffee Morning. We raised lots of money and enjoyed eating cake! We would also like to thank Garry who sang throughout the event and kept us entertained.
Week beginning 19th September
This week we read the story Room on the Broom. We retold the story together and used some actions to match the words. We then wrote the story in our writing books, using capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.
In numeracy we have been counting in multiples of 2's and 10's. Maybe you could continue practicing this at home.
We also had our Every Child is Unique day where we all learned about different disabilities. Some of us wore a blind fold and had a go at writing a sentence. It was quite difficult! Other activities included painting by mouth, para-volley ball and wearing a sock on one hand. Mrs Field taught us how to use sign language to sing a song about Goldilocks. We really enjoyed the day.
Week beginning 12th September
This week we have been finding out the value of each digit in 2 digit numbers, for example 15 has 1 ten and 5 ones. Maybe you could practise this at home.
In literacy we read the story Tiddler by Julia Donaldson. We then had a go at writing the story ourselves. We are getting much better at writing sentences with capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.
Week beginning 5th September
A big well done to all the children on their first week in Year 1. We have had a great week!
We have been writing sentences about the things we like to do at home and trying to remember to use a capital letter at the beginning of a sentence and a full stop at the end.
In our Numeracy lessons we have been ordering numbers and finding missing numbers in a sequence.
Maybe you could practise writing numbers 20 - 50 at home.
In the afternoons we have been talking about our bodies and labelling body parts. We also wrote our wishes, hopes and dreams for Year 1, these will be hung on our Wishing Tree.
